Awards

The Governor’s Council on People with Disabilities (GCPD) annually recognizes businesses, groups and individuals who have significantly contributed to employment opportunities and community involvement for people with disabilities. It is anticipated that their example will inspire others in both the public and private sectors to realize ability rather than disability as the most important factor in employment and community inclusion. 

At the GCPD’s August meeting, Council members announced the 2017 winners of the following awards and scholarships:

Accessible Medical Services Award: This award is given to clinicians in private practice, emergency responders or clinics/hospitals, who demonstrate a commitment to improving the quality of health care and emergency medical services for Ohioans with disabilities. -  Adams-Brown Counties Economic Opportunities Family Planning, Georgetown

Advocacy Award: This award recognizes individual(s) or group(s) who demonstrate outstanding contributions to one or more of the populations served by the GCPD. - SpeakUp!, Hamilton

Employer of the Year Award: This award recognizes employers who have significantly contributed to employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

- Red Robin Gourmet Burgers and Brews, Milford

- thyssenkrupp Bilstein of America, Hamilton

- PaperTech, Findlay

- The Spot Restaurant, Sidney

- OhioHealth, Columbus

GCPD Scholarship: This $250 scholarship is given to a student with a disability who has been accepted to any college, university or trade school. - Alexander Jones, Midland

Karla M. Lortz Scholarship: This $1,000 scholarship is given to a student with a disability who will be a freshman or sophomore in college during the fall semester. - Ava McCleese, Lucasville

Legislator of the Year - State Representative Andrew Brenner R- Powell

Maureen Fitzgerald Leadership Award: This award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated leadership to transform changes to youth. - Edna Sutton, Cleveland
